Greenhouse Gas & Recycling

With funding from the Government of Canada, Action Plan 2000 on Climate Change, Enhanced Recycling Program, the Recycling Council of Ontario and the Government of Canada collaborated to produce a comprehensive fact sheet – Measuring Energy Savings and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Reduction Benefits Resulting from Recycling in Canada – on how recycling can positively affect greenhouse gas emissions.

It is understood that products manufactured from recycled sources require less energy to fabricate and result in fewer emissions and water born effluents than materials manufactured from virgin resources.

This illustrated document establishes baseline information about the five major waste streams, the diversion rates, the emissions reductions and the energy savings benefits that result from recycling efforts. Individual fact sheets cover goods such as household appliances and automobiles, and electronic devices such as televisions and computers.
