Making Waste History Forum, May 2006

Making Waste History: Solving Ontario’s Waste Puzzle, was RCO’s 2006 programming theme. The launch event on Thursday, May 11, 2006 assembled representatives from the Ministry of the Environment, City of Toronto, Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA), Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), and the Canadian Council of Construction Associations (CCCA) among others. These participants provided an overview of the existing state of waste management activity in the province and discussed their initiatives, objectives, barriers and opportunities to advancing Ontario’s waste diversion performance.

The interactive panel discussions challenged the speakers to present their roadmaps for advancing aggressive diversion goals and to identify the best mechanism for launching diversion programs (i.e. establishing policy, developing infrastructure, creating a funding process and tracking/reporting results etc.).

All presentations were thrown open to questions from the delegates to further stimulate the debate. The major areas for discussion were: organics, industrial, commercial and institutional (IC&I) waste, construction, renovation and demolition (CRD) waste, energy from waste (EFW), stewardship and extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs and environmental assessment (EA).
