RCO Submission on the Pharma & Sharps EPR Regulation
Submitted September 12, 2012.
A proposal for an extended producer responsibility regulation under the Environmental Protection Act for the collection of post consumer waste pharmaceuticals and sharps was posted on the Environmental Registry earlier this year. On October 1st, 2012 the regulation “Collection of Pharmaceuticals and Sharps — Responsibilities of Producers" came into force.
The regulation requires producers of pharmaceuticals and sharps (i.e. manufacturers, brand owners or importers) to be responsible for the proper management of the wastes resulting from their products (e.g., unused or expired pharmaceuticals, or used sharps).
The Ministry posted the proposal (EBR Registry Number: 011-6671), titled "Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation for the Collection of Post Consumer Waste Pharmaceuticals and Sharps (including syringes) to be made under the Environmental Protection Act", for public comment on August 1, 2012.
RCO was pleased to have the opportunity to review this proposal and participate in the consultation process.
